Pattern: 3 a.m. Cable Hat
Yarn: Malabrigo in Autumn
Needles: US7
This was a fun, fun hat to make. I learned to cable without a cable needle on this hat because I grow weary of carrying around an extra needle and everyone talks about how much faster it is. After I got the hang of it, it was faster. The concept is simple enough and was easy to execute with this hat, but I think it might get a little more complicated and challenging with more elaborate cables to the point where I will bust out the DPN to help me along.
Malabrigo. What can I say about Malabrigo? The yarn itself is nothing spectacular. Don’t get me wrong – it is merino – so it is super, super soft. However, it is just a single ply, and I don’t think it will stand up to much wear. The colors though. Oh-my-gosh the colors. I didn’t think much of it in the hank – very camo. While knitting it up though I fell in love. It all just came together so beautifully. Perhaps this is a lesson learned. Usually if I like a hand dyed in the hank, I dislike it knit. If I don’t like it in the hank, I love it knit. Will have to pay attention to this more.
Here is a better picture to show the colors. Different hues of greens, browns, and oranges. The colors remind me so much of my friend Jessie. Everything she wore when visiting had these colors. They suit her. Perhaps I will have to knit her a scarf in this. Hmmmm.

Nice hat! Thanks for the link – I’m always looking for new patterns.Cabling without a cable needle works well for a lot of things, but I can’t use the technique if the yarn is slick or if I’m working very tightly. I’m not using a cable needle on my gansey – the yarn holds up really well to being slipped off a needle.

That is a GREAT hat! My son says he loves it. He is trying to talk me into making one for him.
